This is an epic battle – Blogging Versus Internet Marketing. They’re both profitable, and they both have their strengths and weaknesses, in my opinion…
Blue Corner >> Internet Marketing.
This has been around for a while (although comparitively recent because I’m pretty certain we’ve been farmers and stuff for way longer). People doing this legally, or illegally pull in millions of dollars per year. Most people fail at it, but hey, you should at least try. The 80/20 rule is actually more like 80/15/5 where 80% of people fail, 15% see mediocre success, and and 5% see AMAZING success. These would be guys like Frank Kern, Mike Filsaime, Jeff Walker, and so on. These guys make bank, and pull in loads of cash and have the fame because of launches and all that.
They’re know as internet marketers. They sell things on the internet for cash. Now, there are a lot of people out there who make LOTS of money, and do it pretty anonymously! George Brown would be a perfect example of this. He makes $15,000+ using aliases and all that on the internet. He doesn’t do it for fame, or getting to know people – he even says it in his product Google Sniper. He’s only famous because of marketing that product, and doing a product launch.
Marketers are successful because they can start a campaign, and finish it later that day and be making money. They’re smart, and highly-trained people who don’t mess around when it comes to making money. They know the importance of traffic, email marketing, conversions, and all that. Pretty lethal – but they don’t always become famous…
Red Corner >> Blogging
Blogging’s been around forever. It started out as online journals, but then they evolved, and got turned into something more meaningful – a community. Lots and lots of people started reading, commenting, and doing all sorts of promotion. Even search engines favoured these sites after a while (and still do). Wordpress came out on top, and revolutionized the blogging world and internet marketing world because it became a blogging platform to also being a site-building software.
People have managed to make LOTS of money from this. Bloggers mainly monetize their blogs from pay-per-click ads and rake the cents in every time somebody clicks. They’ve also been successful by selling ad space, instead by charging a monthly fee. Affiliate marketing is very evident in blogs, but typically the most successful blogs either have some form of pay-per-click ad like AdSense, or AdBrite, or Kontera, or Chitika. This has actually been able to make them about as much money as internet marketers, but it takes substantially longer because you need to have tons of people going to your blog, and get them to click.
Marketers do use blogs, and systems to do this – but I’m referring to people who have long-term blogs.
The great thing about blogging is that you can build a big, huge following and became famous just through your blog. You may not make money, but damn it, you’ll be known. Gary Vaynerchuk, Darren Rowse, Phillip Defranco, Jake & Amir, and lots of other people are known from having a blog/vlog.
Winner?
It depends if you want Fame, or Riches. If you’d like to have fame, then sure, I’d go with blogging. If you want to make some money – go with being an internet marketer.
You: But Kris, darn it, tell me which one is really the best.
Me: Alright… Both. Nobody ever said you can’t have both.
My blog is used for capturing leads, it’s my central hub, but it’s not the only facet of my marketing. It’s just the site I have to drive people to and learn from me. I put on email-capture forms for a reason! I am becoming well-known, and building a following because of my blog, as well. I’m planning on making a product, and doing a launch and I’ll tell you when! But for now, I’m building that following. I’m rounding up the herd.
If you really want to have both, have a place where people can learn about you. Make it the center of your niche/online presence, too. Even Frank Kern has a blog – an amazing one. It’s not the biggest facet of their business, but it is a very valuable one. It captures leads, makes people love them, and it’s a place to let people know about things.
Hope you’re enjoying the new year!

PS. I’m sleepy – have I missed anything? Lol (hint, hint – comment) Thanks =p
